The e-EPIC is an official PDF version of your voter ID card, issued by the Election Commission. You can keep it on your phone, store it in DigiLocker, or print and laminate it yourself.
It is issued in addition to the PVC card, not instead of it. Downloading an e-EPIC does not cancel or replace the physical card you already have.
What you need
- Your EPIC number, or the reference number of a recent application
- The mobile number registered against your entry on the electoral roll
- An account on the ECI Voters’ Service Portal
The second one is where most attempts fail, and it is worth understanding before you start.
How to download it
- Go to voters.eci.gov.in/download-e-epic.
- Sign in, or create an account with your mobile number.
- Enter your EPIC number and select your state.
- Verify by OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
- Download the PDF.
If the OTP never arrives
This is the usual sticking point. The OTP goes to the number recorded on the electoral roll, not whatever number you are holding now. Many entries were created years ago with a number the voter no longer uses, and plenty have no number at all.
There is no way around the verification, and that is deliberate: without it, anyone could download anyone else’s identity document.
The fix is to get your current number onto the roll, by filing a correction or through your Booth Level Officer. Once the roll holds a number you can receive messages on, the download works.
Is the e-EPIC valid at the polling booth?
It is an official document issued by the Election Commission, and the printed version is intended to be usable as your EPIC.
That said, the identity documents accepted at a given election are notified by the Commission for that election, and requirements can differ. If the e-EPIC is the only document you have, check the notification for your election rather than assuming: see what documents are accepted at the polling booth. If you also hold the PVC card, take that.
Why bother
- It is instant. A replacement PVC card means an application and a wait; the e-EPIC downloads in minutes.
- It cannot be lost the same way. Stored in DigiLocker or on your phone, it survives a misplaced wallet.
- You can print as many as you need.
- It carries your EPIC number, which is what most online services actually want.
One caution
Download only from the ECI domain. The e-EPIC is a photo identity document, and sites offering to fetch one for you, for a fee or otherwise, are collecting your identity details. The service is free on the official portal.
